Mortar and Pestle
This week, the lecturer talked about mortar and pestle.
We had a class exercise related to mortar and pestle this week. We had to choose 3 words from the mindmap that Mr Radzi Bedu showed and write sort of like a story that relates the 3 words to mortar and pestle.
1st. I chose Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt created the mortar and pestle as a sculpture art.
2nd. I chose married. Mortar and pestle were used as a symbol of being married. Man give woman pestle, woman give man mortar.
3rd. I chose game. Mortar and pestle were used for traditional game. Wear mortar on head, wield pestle as a weapon on hand.
Then, players will have to hit the mortar on opponent's head until it breaks to win.

Juxtaposition 2
This week, the lecturer gave another lecture regarding juxtaposition again. This time, I learned that juxtaposition is not only applied in pictures, but also in text and words too. Also, the lecturer tried to explain bad examples of juxtaposition.
Example :
A no smoking sign in an ashtray

Juxtaposition
This week, the lecturer gave a lecture about juxtaposition. Based on the lecture, juxtaposition is an act of comparing two things being placed next to each other and then interpreting the meaning.
Example :
Juxtaposition of showing the same product with different colors.
Different colors could bring out different meaning and feeling of the image.

Method of Creative Thinking
This week, the lecturer taught us about mind mapping. Wikipedia states that a mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, decision making, and writing.
The elements of a given mind map are arranged intuitively according to the importance of the concepts, and are classified into groupings, branches, or areas, with the goal of representing semantic or other connections between portions of information. Mind maps may also aid recall of existing memories. By presenting ideas in a radial, graphical, non-linear manner, mind maps encourage a brainstorming approach to planning and organizational tasks. Though the branches of a mindmap represent hierarchical tree structures, their radial arrangement disrupts the prioritizing of concepts typically associated with hierarchies presented with more linear visual cues. This orientation towards brainstorming encourages users to enumerate and connect concepts without a tendency to begin within a particular conceptual framework.
The mind map can be contrasted with the similar idea of concept mapping. The former is based on radial hierarchies and tree structures denoting relationships with a central governing concept, whereas concept maps are based on connections between concepts in more diverse patterns.
An example of a mindmap :
Then, as a homework, we are required to do a mindmap about ourselves. This is what I did.

Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention
This week, the lecturer gave a lecture about these 4 words - novelty, creativity, innovation and invention. The first is novelty. Novelty is the quality of being new or unusual. According to wikipedia, the term novelty can have pejorative sense and refer to a mere innovation.
Example of Novelty
A chair in the shape of a hand

Second is creativity. Wikipedia states that creativity is a mental process involving the discovery of new ideas or concepts, or new associations of the existing ideas or concepts.
Example of Creativity :
An ad for the "Zen" mp3 player
source : http://www.creative.com/images/products/mp3/zenvisionm/wallpapers/wp800_zenvisionm_1.jpg
Third is innovation. Innovation is the act of introducing or doing something new. According to wikipedia, innovation may refer to an incremental emergent or radical and revolutionary changes in thinking, products, processes, or organizations.
Example of innovation :
A billboard ad

Fourth is invention. An invention is a new device, method, or process developed from study and experimentation. Inventions often extend the boundaries of human knowledge or experience.
Example of invention :
An invention of a tea-bag holder

The lecture is basically explaining the importance of novelty, creativity, innovation and invention. We must not miss out these 4 important "concepts" in our works (as a designer).

Defining Creativity
What is creativity? Is it really that hard to explain? No. There are many many definitions of creativity but they all basically mean new generation of ideas or ways of doing things. It's not defining creativity that is hard, it's being creative that is hard. This is what our lecturers are trying to teach us in our creative studies class - defining creativity.
This is a very interesting speech by Sir Ken Robinson about creativity which was shown during the lecture. Sir Ken Robinson talks about how education is killing creativity, how people are educated out of their creative capacities. He made a lot of interesting quotes in this speech. The one that really grabbed on to my mind is this :
I really think what he said above is rather interesting. I personally think too that everyone is afraid of making mistakes. We are being taught to be afraid of making mistakes ever since childhood. Mistakes are the worst thing we can make. That is why we're afraid of making, creating or doing something new or different. Why should we be afraid of being different or original? As long as we don't cross the line of insane or crazy, we're doing fine. But we are all educated to be afraid of mistakes.
Right now I really am thinking very hardly. I always ask myself this question when I'm doing my works, "What if other people thinks my work is weird?" Asking myself that question always gets me stuck for a time in my works. I SHOULD be asking myself this question instead, "How do I explain that my work is creative?" I still don't have a good answer to that but at least I'm asking myself the correct question now.
If you are unpredictable, you are creative.
